Smart Locks & Apple Home — the complete guide
Picking a smart lock for Apple Home comes down to three questions: does it support Apple Home Key, which protocol does it speak, and does it need a hub? Here is how to answer all three before you buy.
1. Apple Home Key — the tap-to-unlock feature
Apple Home Key stores a digital key in the Wallet app on your iPhone or Apple Watch. To unlock, you tap the device against the lock's reader — no app, no code. With Express Mode it unlocks without Face ID or a passcode, and you can share keys with family through Messages.
The catch: Home Key only works with locks that explicitly support it. It is a separate Apple feature from Matter — a lock can speak Matter and still have no Home Key, and a HomeKit-only lock can have it. Always check the spec sheet for the words “Apple Home Key”.
2. Three ways to make a door smart
- Full deadbolt replacement — you swap the whole deadbolt. Best feature set, but you lose your existing key and it is not ideal for a rental.
- Retrofit lock — mounts over the inside of your existing deadbolt and keeps your key and cylinder. The rental-friendly option (for example the Aqara U200).
- Lever / handle lock — for handle-style doors rather than deadbolts (for example the Aqara U300).
3. Protocols — what locks actually speak
| Protocol | Works with | Needs a hub? |
|---|---|---|
| Matter over Thread | Apple Home, Google, Alexa | Thread border router |
| HomeKit (Bluetooth) | Apple Home only | No border router; home hub for remote |
| Matter over Wi-Fi | Apple Home, Google, Alexa | No — needs Wi-Fi and power |
| Zigbee via vendor hub | Apple Home (via Matter bridge) | Vendor hub |
If you might ever add Google or Alexa gear, choose Matter — it is cross-ecosystem. If you are all-Apple and want Apple Home Key, a HomeKit lock is perfectly fine.
4. Do you need a hub?
- Thread lock? Yes — you need a Thread border router in the home (a HomePod mini or Apple TV 4K does the job).
- HomeKit-over-Bluetooth lock? No border router needed; it pairs straight to Apple Home. Remote access and automations still need a home hub.
- Vendor ecosystem lock? Some locks only expose Matter through the maker's own hub — check the “Needs a hub” row on the device page.
5. Features that actually matter
- Apple Home Key (NFC tap), fingerprint and keypad — the three fast ways in.
- UWB / approach unlock — hands-free unlocking as you walk up (for example the Aqara U400).
- Protocol — Matter/Thread for the future, HomeKit for Apple-only.
- Form factor — deadbolt, retrofit, or lever, depending on your door.
- Battery type and IP rating for outdoor doors.

FAQ
Does Apple Home Key need a hub?
Home Key itself is just NFC — you tap your iPhone or Apple Watch to the lock, so it needs no hub on its own. You do need a home hub for remote access and automations, and a Thread lock additionally needs a Thread border router (HomePod mini or Apple TV 4K).
Is every Matter lock Apple Home Key compatible?
No. Matter is a cross-ecosystem language; Apple Home Key is a separate Apple feature. Some Matter locks support Home Key, some do not — check the spec sheet for the words 'Apple Home Key'.
Can I keep my existing key and cylinder?
Yes, with a retrofit lock that mounts over your existing deadbolt on the inside. It keeps your key and your building's key cylinder, which makes it the rental-friendly option.
Do smart locks still work if the internet is down?
Locks that speak Matter, Thread or Bluetooth work locally, so you can still lock and unlock on site. Cloud features such as remote unlock and away automations pause until the connection is back.
