Do you need a hub?

Depends on three things: your devices' protocol, whether you want remote access, and whether you use Thread.

You need a hub if…

• You own Thread devices → you need a Thread border router (HomePod mini / Apple TV 4K).
• You want remote access or automations that run when you're away → you need an Apple Home hub.
• Your devices are exposed via a vendor bridge (e.g. Zigbee gear) → you need that vendor's hub.

You can skip it if…

• Every device is Matter over Wi-Fi and you only control things while home.
