How to add a device to Apple Home
Most modern devices pair in under a minute — if you know whether they use Matter or HomeKit, and whether they need a hub.
1. Check the code
Look for a QR code or an 8-digit setup code on the device or its manual. Matter devices show a distinctive Matter logo next to the code.
2. Open Apple Home and add
- Apple Home app → + (top right) → Add Accessory.
- Scan the code (or enter the 8-digit number).
- Assign it to a room and name it.
3. If it won't pair
- Thread device? Make sure a Thread border router (HomePod mini / Apple TV 4K) is online.
- Vendor hub required? Some devices only expose Matter via the maker's own hub — see the device page's "Needs hub" field.
- Already paired elsewhere? A Matter device must be reset before it can move to a new ecosystem/fabric.
