Matter vs Zigbee
They're not rivals in the way people think: Zigbee is a radio/mesh; Matter is a common language that usually runs over Thread or Wi-Fi.
Zigbee
An established low-power mesh. Devices need a Zigbee hub/bridge (e.g. Aqara, SmartThings) to reach your network. It's not natively an Apple Home protocol — many vendors expose their Zigbee devices to Apple Home via a Matter bridge (like the Aqara Hub M3).
Matter
The cross-ecosystem standard. A Matter device works across Apple Home, Google and Alexa. It runs over Thread or Wi-Fi.
Practical takeaway
Buying new? Prefer Matter — it's future-proof and cross-ecosystem. Already own Zigbee gear? A Matter-capable hub (like the Aqara Hub M3) brings it into Apple Home without replacing everything.
